If you're participating in a Secret Santa or gift exchange of any type this year, we have some great suggestions, but if a DIY gift is more your style, consider making some vanilla sugar or some smoked salts. They're easy to make, keep well, and both pack a lot of flavor in relatively small bottles. Your coworkers and friends will thank you.
Vanilla sugar is surprisingly easy to make. You'll need vanilla bean pods, sugar, a bottle to keep it all in, and about 2 weeks to let the flavors develop, that's about it. Smoked salt takes a little more effort, and requires you to head out to the grill to make it, but once you've made some for yourself, you won't be able to resist making some to share with your food-loving friends. In both cases, a few ingredients and a little cash go a long way towards some fancy, fast DIY holiday gifts that any home cook or food fan will enjoy.
