The Senate has been working on a bipartisan deal to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling. NEW YORK (AP) — Intel said Tuesday that its third-quarter net income was unchanged, stymied by a continued slump in global PC demand.
The chipmaker earned $2.95 billion, or 58 cents per share, compared with $2.97 billion, or 58 cents per share, in the same quarter of 2012.
Revenue also was unchanged at about $13.5 billion.
The drop in PC-related sales came amid another decline in PC shipments. Intel supplies chips for about four out of every five PCs. The rest come from Advanced Micro Devices Inc., which reports financial results on Thursday.
IDC said last week that worldwide PC shipments fell nearly 8 percent during the third quarter, to 81.6 million, while fellow market research firm Gartner Inc. put the decline at almost 9 percent, to 80.3 million. The two firms define PCs slightly differently. The drop marked the sixth-straight quarter of decline for the industry, as computer makers, and the companies that supply them, try to reshape themselves amid the continued shift toward tablets and smartphones.
Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said on a conference call with investors that while consumer demand in emerging markets was sluggish during the recent quarter, the company started to see early signs of improvement in North America and western Europe. He attributed that to the company's growing product lineup.
Intel's results for the quarter, which ended Sept. 28, beat Wall Street predictions. Analysts polled by FactSet expected a profit of 53 cents per share on revenue of $13.4 billion.
Revenue at the company's personal-computer business fell 3.5 percent to $8.4 billion because of a drop in the number of chips sold, while data center revenue increased 12 percent to $2.9 billion, helped by both higher prices and higher volumes.
For the fourth-quarter, Intel projected revenue of $13.2 billion to $14.2 billion. Analysts were looking for $14.0 billion.
Shares of Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel Corp. fell 59 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $22.80 in extended trading after the release of results.

(AP) — The head of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement says authorities have captured the two prisoners who were released by phony documents.
Commissioner Gerald Bailey said Saturday night that Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker were taken into custody together at a motel in Panama City Beach.
The men were mistakenly released within the last month.
Bailey did not immediately release any other details.
Britney Spears, who spent a couple of days in London this week doing promo for her new album Britney Jean and her upcoming Las Vegas residency Piece of Me, is already back home in the US but last night she appeared on British TV in an interview she taped with Alan Carr on his brilliant talk show Chatty Man. For the most part, Britney was cute and endearing in the interview with only a few places where she got a bit awkward … but hey, it’s been a long time since she’s made herself available for these kinds of interviews so I can forgive her for being a bit rusty. Chatty Man is such a great show, I wish we were able to watch it here in the US (and NO, I’m not interested in an American version of the show … I want Austin Powers Alan Carr or nothing at all). Just a few years before the start of the Civil War, two anti-slavery books became best-sellers in the United States. One was Uncle Tom's Cabin, the Harriet Beecher Stowe opus that went on to become the best-selling novel of the 19th century.
The other was a memoir with a mouthful of a title: Twelve Years a Slave: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a citizen of New-York, kidnapped in Washington City in 1841, and rescued in 1853 from a cotton plantation near the Red River in Louisiana.
Twelve Years a Slave — successful enough to prompt multiple editions before falling into obscurity after the war — was rediscovered by scholars in the 1960s and has now been transformed into a wrenching, soul-stirring film from British director Steve McQueen.
The film begins with an enslaved Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) cutting sugar cane on a Louisiana plantation, then flashes back to the life he'd been leading just a few years earlier in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. There, he was a musician of stature, living with his wife and three kids in comfort and even some luxury. A free black family in a state that did not allow slavery, they inhabited a world of learning and culture.
In fact it's Solomon's talent as a violinist that leads to his downfall. He accompanies two men to Washington for what he thinks is a fiddling job, only to have them get him drunk and betray him. New York has laws protecting its African-American residents. The nation's capital does not. He wakes up in chains.

Without papers to establish his identity, far from anyone who knows him, Solomon is helpless when his kidnappers rename him Platt and ship him off to Louisiana to be sold. As other desperate men in chains tell him, he'll be killed if he even says his real name, let alone tries to escape. Survival means "keeping your head down," he's told.
"I don't want to survive," he gasps. "I want to live."
Still, survival comes first. Sold to a Baptist preacher (Benedict Cumberbatch) who realizes there's more to him than meets the eye, and who treats him, as another slave puts it, like "prized livestock," Solomon does keep his head down. He bides his time, and urges others around him to do the same.
Inwardly, though, he's seething. And when another slave accuses him of truckling to his master, he roars, "My back is thick with scars for protesting my freedom."
McQueen keeps those scars — and the brutality that creates them — front and center in 12 Years a Slave, with incidents that scald, and searing supporting performances, particularly from Michael Fassbender (star of McQueen's previous art-house films Hunger and Shame) as a sadistic but strangely conflicted slave owner.
But it is Ejiofor — bewildered, sorely tested, morally towering — whose staggered dignity anchors the film.
John Ridley's script brings both historical sweep and an urgent intimacy to Northup's story — no small accomplishment. Rife with visceral beatings, multiple lynchings and an almost casual air of psychological cruelty, 12 Years a Slave is anything but easy to watch, but it is powerfully moving.
It's also a powerful corrective, because it so skillfully links that brutality to the sort of tranquil antebellum South that Hollywood has often peddled — the broad porches, the hoop skirts, the fields fluffy with cotton. It will be hard for audiences to see those images ever again without thinking about the savagery and injustice that propped them up.
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's rand climbed to four-week highs against the dollar on Friday, lifted by buoyant emerging market investor sentiment following this week's resolution to the U.S. fiscal standoff.
Government bonds followed suit, with yields falling to May/June lows as investors whose risk appetite had been dented by the prospect of a default by the world's biggest economy came back to high-yielding emerging markets.
Currencies like the rand have also gained ground in recent weeks after the U.S. Federal Reserve delayed the start of a cut-back in its $85 billion-a-month bond purchases that have channeled a steady flow of portfolio money into emerging markets.
By 1543 GMT the local currency was at 9.7475 per dollar, up 0.74 percent from Thursday's New York close. It flirted briefly with 9.7410 earlier on Friday, the strongest it has been since September 20.
Against the euro, the rand was up 0.64 percent at 13.2825.
On the debt market, yields fell across the curve, with the 2026 secondary market benchmark shedding four basis points to 7.745 percent and the shorter-dated 2015 giving up 1.5 basis points to 5.755 percent.
Government bonds could however pull back next week if Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan adjusts his budget deficit forecast for the current fiscal year wider and signals increased debt issuance.
For its part, the rand, which has weakened nearly 16 percent since the start of the year, remains hostage to a yawning current account deficit of around 6 percent of GDP which makes it vulnerable to sudden flights of capital during spurts of risk aversion.
"Although the rand is cheap, its fundamental underpinnings remain weak," Standard Bank said in a market note.
"The Fed tapering delay and U.S. fiscal quick-fix will offer little more than a temporary reprieve."

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — With flecks of gray in his sideburns, it's apparent that Jeff Gordon is long removed from those days as a hotshot young driver who seemed destined to win more NASCAR Cup championships than anyone.
Heck, not too long ago people were wondering if he was all washed up.
Well, look who's in contention for a Sprint Cup championship.
Yep, the guy they used to call Wonder Boy.
"I just like the fact that you're talking about that," Gordon said Friday, chatting with a reporter outside his hauler. "That means things are happening for us. It's been so long. I don't know what it feels like anymore to win a championship."
It's been 12 long years, to be exact, since Gordon captured the last of his four titles.
But he heads into Sunday's race at Talladega Superspeedway ranking fourth in the points and hoping to take advantage of a track where the standings can change in a hurry.
"I don't even know if I have the words to describe how much it would mean," Gordon said. "The longer you're in the sport, the more ups and downs you go through, the more meaningful the wins and the championships. Certainly nothing would top that."
He knows he's still a long shot, with Matt Kenseth and teammate Jimmie Johnson holding down the top two spots. Gordon trails Kenseth by 36 points and Johnson by 32 — a lot of ground to make up. The odds that both will suddenly go into a slump is a stretch, to say the least, and Kevin Harvick also stands between Gordon and the top spot.
But at Talladega, where restrictor plates lead to tight racing and big crashes, there's always a chance to make a big move — up or down.
Besides, it's already rather improbable that Gordon still has a chance for his fifth championship.
In the last race before the Chase, it looked as though he had come up one point shy of the 12-driver playoff. Then, NASCAR uncovered all sorts of shenanigans among teams trying to lock up their spot or help out a teammate, leading to the unprecedented decision to add Gordon as a 13th driver in the playoff.
He's doing his best to take advantage of the second chance, finishing in the top 10 in four of the first five Chase races.
He also understands why so many people began writing him off in recent years, the sport he once dominated seemingly passing him by.
"You know, I get it," Gordon said. "It's all about performance and stats in this sport."
While he never totally faded away, the last serious run at a title came way back in 2007, when Gordon won six times and finished second behind Johnson.
If nothing else, the long dry spell has made Gordon realize how much he took all those titles in his 20s for granted.
"Oh gosh, I can tell you I didn't appreciate the first one near enough," he said. "To have what, 11 or 12 years now in between our last one, you better believe I would appreciate it a lot more."
To make a run at Kenseth and Johnson, Gordon will likely need to win a race or two — something he hasn't done all season.
That's where things get a big tricky.
"I feel like I'm definitely a more patient and smarter driver today," Gordon said, before quickly adding, "Anytime a driver says that, it means that's probably not putting it out there on the edge quite as much as he used to. So, you've got to take the pros and cons of what you've learned over the years and where you're at. I feel like in some ways, I'm probably not putting myself in vulnerable positions enough and pushing the limits of it. But on the flip side of that, I'm bringing the car home in one piece a lot more often."
Another Hendricks Motorsports teammate, Dale Earnhardt Jr., said Gordon seems as driven as ever to win another title.
"How he goes through the process of working a race weekend, being tenacious, trying to figure out the car, working with the crew, utilizing practice, putting in the effort, that desire is as strong as it's always been as far as I can tell," Earnhardt said. "He's got the confidence that he's the best guy out there and he wants to prove that every week. You can see that in his demeanor and his body language."
No matter how the season turns out, Gordon has gotten another taste of what it's like to be in the mix.
He likes the feeling.
"Earlier in the year, people wrote me off and said, 'When are you going to retire?'" Gordon said, with plenty of satisfaction in his voice. "Now everybody is like, 'Wow, look at this guy. Where did he come from? He's back. He's got that confidence and that smile.' Well, yeah. Because the cars have been awesome and as a team, we're coming together at the right time and putting great efforts out there and results.
"That's fun. That's what I like to do."

If you spent any quality time with your TV in the late ‘80s and early '90s, then it’s likely you got to know the loud and lovable Conners on “Roseanne.” Now, prepare to feel old, because the classic sitcom is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its debut Friday.
Based on the real life experiences of creator Matt Williams and the “domestic goddess” stand-up comedy routines of its lead, Roseanne Barr, “Roseanne” the sitcom was a far cry from the safe, middle-class comedies of the day. The Conner household was packed with three rowdy kids and the snarky whine of Roseanne, who along with her loving husband, Dan (played by John Goodman), kept it all together — barely.
Looking at the shows that have come since, creator Matt Williams told TODAY in an exclusive interview, “I don’t think you would have 'Mike & Molly' without Dan and Roseanne.”
The son of two blue-collar parents in Evansville, Ind., Williams said what inspired "Roseanne" was the old adage “Write what you know.”
“That’s what I did,” he explained. “My father worked on an assembly line in a factory. My mother was a waitress who later became a beautician. Dan is an amalgamation of all my uncles, who were independent contractors.”
William "got out" of Indiana and ended up a writer in Los Angeles.
“But a lot of people graduated from high school and didn’t go to college," he recalled of those he left behind. "A lot have never left the Midwest, but they aren’t stupid people. They are good, hardworking people who worry about paying their bills and taking care of their kids.”
Actress Goranson, 39, who played Becky (well, Becky No. 1), told TODAY that looking back, she thinks the biggest impact of the show was “this archetypal family that had story lines around money issues and personal issues and love and ... that was such a mirroring for families in the United States and around the world. I think it really helped people communicate better ... and also not feel isolated.”
The intent of the sitcom, Williams added, was "to represent the people I grew up with — without condescending — and basically celebrate this working-class family with a husband and wife who loved each other."
To that end, the creator wanted to keep it real. He had plenty of help from a cast that, in addition to Barr and Goodman, included Steppenwolf Theatre alumnus Laurie Metcalf, and then-newcomers Sara Gilbert, Alicia Goranson and Michael Fishman (Darlene, Becky and D.J., respectively).
“I give all the credit to (casting agents) Risa Bramon and Billy Hopkins,” Williams said of the caliber of acting talent assembled. “They went out and found a great cast. I don’t know how many kids they auditioned but it was hundreds and hundreds. And then John Goodman walked in the room and it was like he and (Roseanne) had been married for 16 years.”
The folks in charge of casting certainly had an eye for talent. In addition to finding talented actors that made the far from perfect nuclear family of "Roseanne" work so well as a unit, they also snagged some then unknowns who turned into A-listers later on. George Clooney had a recurring role as Roseanne's boss Booker, Joseph Gordon-Levitt appeared in various episodes as DJ's little pal, Bob Odenkirk had a cameo as a shoe salesman/health inspector, and more.
The Conner house also had additional touches of reality and familiarity to the show: Williams said that it's based on his grandma's home.
"The whole layout of the mud room and the kitchen is my grandmother's house," Williams revealed. "The afghan on the back of the couch and the louvered windows above the sink and the house we used for transitions was the house. ... From day one, in my grandmother's house, she had an extra-long phone cord."
As for the lasting impact “Roseanne” has had on the TV landscape, Williams simply said, “I don’t know. I think it would be a hard sell in today’s market. At the time, networks were willing to take the chance, but now everything is so analyzed and fragmented into key demographics. At the time, I didn’t even think about any of that stuff. They were real people to me, and I just wanted to write about their experiences.”

The first such clearinghouse of its scope and type, the Center for Geoscience Education and Public Understanding's searchable web site http://www.geocntr.org provides the geoscience community, schools, and the general public with an extensive collection of resources and research from reliable science and education organizations.
"Teachers, media, families, and policy-makers should bookmark this site as the starting point for research about Earth and space science education," said Ann Benbow, director of the Center. "We have collected and organized resources that provide a variety of perspectives on important issues, and the site expands daily."
The Center's new site currently provides access to resources from nearly 700 organizations. These include universities, museums, federal and state agencies, media groups, AGI, and its member organizations and publishers. Approximately 2,000 annotated and searchable resource entries are available on the site, and this number includes many collections and galleries, each with hundreds of individual items such as photographs, videos, and presentations.
A sample of materials on the site: Earth science curricula; Earth science classroom activities; Teacher professional development programs; Science-topic presentations; Animation, video collections/still galleries; Virtual field trips; State science/Earth science organizations; Funding sources for teachers; Teaching award information; Earth science outreach programs.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nicki Minaj knows celebrities-turned-designers aren't always taken seriously in the fashion world, but she doesn't mind.
At a launch event Tuesday for her Kmart collection, Minaj said skepticism of stars lacking formal design training is "understandable," but she insists it's "not about being a designer."
The "Starships" rapper says her intention is simply to make clothes that she would love to wear.
The line for Kmart and shopyourway.com features midriff-baring tops, patterned leggings and curve-hugging dresses, as well as jewelry, clutches and bejeweled caps.
There's also a pink velour track suit and a faux fur trapper hat.
Minaj says Chanel, Versace and Herve Leger were among her inspirations.
Prices range from $3.99 for a studded bracelet to $37.99 for a light wash, denim jacket.

Three members of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) community will be honored this evening by the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame (NJIHoF) in recognition of their contributions to innovation in the Garden State. Treena Livingston Arinzeh, PhD, Roberto Rojas-Cessa, PhD, and Khondaker M. Salehin, PhD, will receive awards at a formal banquet on Oct. 17, 2013 at the W Hotel in Hoboken.
Treena Livingston Arinzeh and Roberto Rojas-Cessa will each accept an Innovators Award, which recognizes significant scientific achievement. Dr. Arinzeh, a professor of biomedical engineering, will be recognized for her renowned research and inventions utilizing biomaterials and regenerative medicines for orthopedic and neural disorders. Earlier this month, Arinzeh was awarded the NJIT Board of Overseers Excellence in Research Prize and Medal in recognition of a sustained record of contributions that has enhanced the reputation of NJIT. Dr. Rojas-Cessa, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will be honored for his renowned research in the areas of broadband and high-speed networks and a wide range of computer communication technology applications.
Accepting a Graduate Student Award will be Khondaker M. Salehin, PhD, an adjunct professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in recognition of his patents related to advancing schemes for measurements of Internet performance parameters. Dr. Salehin, who received his doctoral degree from NJIT in May 2013, collaborates with Dr. Rojas-Cessa on his research.
Established in 1987, The New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame promotes and fosters creativity, invention and innovation, which contributes to economic growth and improvement of the quality of life in New Jersey and around the globe. The organization, unique to the State of New Jersey, honors inventors, innovators, and others who have created and developed their inventions in the State of New Jersey, "The Invention State".

Three members of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) community will be honored this evening by the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame (NJIHoF) in recognition of their contributions to innovation in the Garden State. Treena Livingston Arinzeh, PhD, Roberto Rojas-Cessa, PhD, and Khondaker M. Salehin, PhD, will receive awards at a formal banquet on Oct. 17, 2013 at the W Hotel in Hoboken.
Treena Livingston Arinzeh and Roberto Rojas-Cessa will each accept an Innovators Award, which recognizes significant scientific achievement. Dr. Arinzeh, a professor of biomedical engineering, will be recognized for her renowned research and inventions utilizing biomaterials and regenerative medicines for orthopedic and neural disorders. Earlier this month, Arinzeh was awarded the NJIT Board of Overseers Excellence in Research Prize and Medal in recognition of a sustained record of contributions that has enhanced the reputation of NJIT. Dr. Rojas-Cessa, an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will be honored for his renowned research in the areas of broadband and high-speed networks and a wide range of computer communication technology applications.
Accepting a Graduate Student Award will be Khondaker M. Salehin, PhD, an adjunct professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, in recognition of his patents related to advancing schemes for measurements of Internet performance parameters. Dr. Salehin, who received his doctoral degree from NJIT in May 2013, collaborates with Dr. Rojas-Cessa on his research.
Established in 1987, The New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame promotes and fosters creativity, invention and innovation, which contributes to economic growth and improvement of the quality of life in New Jersey and around the globe. The organization, unique to the State of New Jersey, honors inventors, innovators, and others who have created and developed their inventions in the State of New Jersey, "The Invention State".

The operator of the popular file-sharing service isoHunt, which the courts have declared a massive copyright scofflaw, is shutting down to settle a long-running lawsuit from the Motion Picture Association of America, according to court records lodged today.
Gary Fung, the site’s Canadian operator, also agreed to pay $110 million in damages as part of the deal to end the long-running legal battle. He is unlikely to get his hands on that much money, but the Hollywood studios get what they want: the shuttering of a torrent search engine that pointed the way to pirated movies, music, videogames and software. The deal (.pdf) includes Fung sites called IsoHunt, TorrenTBox and Podtropolis.
“Today’s settlement is a major step forward in realizing the enormous potential of the internet as a platform for legitimate commerce and innovation,” said Chris Dodd, the MPAA’s chairman. “It also sends a strong message that those who build businesses around encouraging, enabling, and helping others to commit copyright infringement are themselves infringers, and will be held accountable for their illegal actions.”
Programmer Bram Cohen released the BitTorrent file-sharing protocol in 2001, and its efficient way of transferring files has become the method of choice for illicit, peer-to-peer sharing of copyright-protected content that sites like Canada’s isoHunt and Europe’s The Pirate Bay have capitalized upon.

The isoHunt litigation began in a Los Angeles federal court in 2006. In March of this year, a three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that, unlike the search engine Google, Fung does not deserve protection under U.S. copyright laws for hosting links to pirated content. That’s because Fung’s business model, the court said, was designed for the primary purpose of copyright infringement, with the majority of links on his search engines pointing to unauthorized, copyright-protected content. It was the first time a U.S. federal appeals court has ruled against a BitTorrent search engine.
Fung claimed it was not he, but his millions of users, who fed his sites with links and were redistributing them without authorization from the rights holders. Fung asserted that he was merely a search engine, like Google, that was protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s so-called safe-harbor provision that permits internet companies to escape liability for illegal content posted by their users if it is promptly removed at the request of the rights holder. Fung claimed he removed files upon request.
The appeals court did not see it his way, ruling the safe harbor under the DMCA does not exist for sites that “induce” unlawful file sharing. The court noted that isoHunt had prominently featured a list of “Box Office Movies” of the 20 highest-grossing movies in U.S. theaters, and also hosted links to where the movies were being seeded by BitTorrent users. Once somebody begins downloading the link, they also begin seeding the file to others in what is known as a “swarm.”
The U.S. Copyright Act carries penalties of up to $150,000 per violation.
Under terms of the settlement, Fung has seven days to shutter the sites.
IsoHunt claims to offer 44 million peers, more than 13 million active torrents, and is ranked the 426th most-visited website, according to Alexa.com.
Fung declined comment.

The “With You” singer donned a black and white tweed jacket with a low-cut top and black trousers as she held her handsome fiancé’s arm and scouted locations for their upcoming wedding.
An insider told press that Jessica and Eric will get married at the Giardini D’Augusto near Faraglioni. “They came to Capri for their first trip together. It’s a special place for them.”
Simpson previously told press that Johnson couldn’t wait to pop the question mere months after they started dating. “He had talked to my mom and dad and my sister three weeks before he asked me. I can't believe all the Simpsons kept a secret.”
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Republican New York City mayoral candidate Joe Lhota, trailing far behind Democratic rival Bill de Blasio in polls, took a shot at the leader this week with a TV ad that evoked memories of the dark, violent New York of the 1970s and 80s.
The 30-second ad begins with video of a September incident in which a motorcycle gang chased and then beat the driver of a sport-utility vehicle on a Manhattan highway. A narrator reads "Bill de Blasio's recklessly dangerous agenda on crime will take us back to this," and the ad shifts to images including the city's formerly graffiti-covered subway trains and a flipped-over police car.
Those latter photos came from the 25-year period when Democratic mayors ran the city, before Republican Rudolph Giuliani, famous for his aggressive crackdown on crime, kicked off a 20-year period without a Democrat in Gracie Mansion.
Lhota was a Giuliani deputy who went on to serve as the head of New York's mass-transit agency.
De Blasio campaign officials on Thursday did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment. A campaign representative told the New York Daily News: "Lhota is right that we can't go back: we shouldn't return to the days when Republicans like Giuliani used fear tactics to divide New Yorkers against each other."
Giuliani's successor Michael Bloomberg, was elected in 2002 as a Republican and later changed his affiliation to independent.
Polls suggest the city's Democratic party has a very strong chance of breaking that streak of losses in November. De Blasio had the support of 67 percent of likely voters in a Wall Street Journal/NBC 4 New York/Marist poll released last week, which found that just 23 percent of likely voters supported Lhota.

England and defending champion Spain qualified for the World Cup on Tuesday night along with Russia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which earned its first berth as an independent nation.
Three more spots were at stake in late games in South and Central America, finalizing 21 of the 32 slots for the field in Brazil next June.
Wayne Rooney scored in the 41st minute and Steven Gerrard in the 88th to give England (6-0-4) a 2-0 win over Poland at London's Wembley Stadium and first place in Group H by one point over Ukraine (6-1-3). The Three Lions qualified for their 14th World Cup and fifth in a row.
Spain (6-0-2) won Group I with a 2-0 victory over visiting Georgia on goals by Alvaro Negredo in the 26th minute and Juan Mata on Juan Mata in the 61st. France (5-1-2) was second and will be in the playoffs despite defeating visiting Finland 3-0 on goals by Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema around Joona Toivio's own goal.
Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal, Greece, Ukraine, Romania and Iceland also finished second in their groups, winding up in Monday's draw for the eight-team European playoffs next month along with Sweden and Croatia. The four playoff winners also will earn berths.
Denmark (4-2-4) had the worst record of the nine second-place teams and missed out.
Bosnia (8-1-1) won 1-0 at Lithuania on Vedad Ibisevic's 68th-minute goal to win Group G on goal difference over Greece (8-1-1), which beat visiting Liechtenstein 2-0 as Dimitris Salpingidis scored in the seventh minute and Giorgos Karagounis added a goal in the 81st.
Russia (7-2-1) won Group F with a 1-1 tie at Azerbaijan as Roman Shirokov scored in the 15th. Portugal (6-1-3) finished a point back after defeating visiting Luxembourg 3-0 on goals by Silvestre Varela, Nani and Helder Postiga.
Later Tuesday, Ecuador, Chile and Uruguay competed for South America's final two automatic berths, with Uruguay and Venezuala having a chance to finish fifth — which earns a playoff against Jordan.
In North and Central America and the Caribbean, Honduras was three points ahead of Mexico for the region's last automatic berth, and Mexico was three points ahead of Panama for fourth playoff and a playoff against Oceania champion New Zealand. The U.S., which clinched last month, was at Panama, while Mexico was at Costa Rica, and Honduras at Jamaica.
