Nintendo wants to keep up Black Friday momentum (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? After a strong Black Friday showing, Nintendo now has to focus on maintaining the momentum for its products over the next five weeks of the crucial holiday season, the company's U.S. president told the Reuters Global Media Summit on Tuesday.

Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, said the company records 60 percent of its revenue during the holiday period, 10 percentage points above the industry norm.

"In the next five weeks, I need to sell a lot of Nintendo 3DS, Wii and software," he said.

Investors will be watching Nintendo's holiday sales performance more closely than ever because the company's stock price has been declining and it is forecasting its first annual net loss this year.

Fils-Aime said the company was on track to meet its holiday sales targets and blamed the soaring yen for the company's financial problems this year.

"Every dollar I send back to Japan is worth less, so for us as a business, what I need to do is to focus on selling more hardware, more software and drive revenue as best as I can because I can't impact the currency markets," he said.

Nintendo would like to keep up the pace of its Black Friday sales, when the largest retailers in the U.S. discounted video game products, using them as a loss leader to bring consumers into the stores. The majority of Nintendo's sales are in the U.S.

Wal-Mart sold a limited edition blue Wii console for $99.96 that sold out on Black Friday, for instance.

"Wal-Mart lost money on every Wii they sold. We did not lose money on it," Fils-Aime said, declining to comment on how much money the big-box retailer lost on the deal.

A Wal-Mart spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nintendo said it sold more than 500,000 Wii units on Black Friday, along with record sales of the 3DS and new games such as "Super Mario 3D Land" and "Zelda: Skyward Sword." Its new "MarioKart 7" game which comes out in December is expected to also sell well.

Microsoft said on Tuesday it sold 960,000 Xbox consoles during the week of Black Friday, its best week of sales ever.

WII U

Nintendo's next big product launch is the Wii U, the first home console to hit the market in years and the follow-up to its smash hit Wii console.

The new console, which features a touch-screen controller and high definition graphics, will come out sometime between April and December 2012.

Fils-Aime said Nintendo has learned a lot from the mistakes it made during the 3DS launch, which lacked strong first-party titles -- meaning games made by Nintendo -- at the start.

The initial price on the 3DS was also too high, something that Nintendo will be careful about this time around, he said.

"We had to go back and reduce the price of 3DS and we certainly don't want to go through that when we launch Wii U," Fils-Aime said.

US, Europe risk another recession, report says

The United States and others must "be prepared to face the worst" as Europe slides toward another recession, according to a gloomy warning from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Failure by EU leaders to stem the debt crisis that has spread from Greece to much-bigger Italy "could massively escalate economic disruption" and end in "highly devastating outcomes," the Paris-based OECD said in its latest bi-annual economic forecast on Monday.

Improved global prospects would also depend on the enactment of a credible medium-term fiscal program in the United States, it said.

"The global economy is not out of the woods," the report said.

It added that even the U.S. was at risk of returning to recession if "no action [was] agreed to offset the large degree of fiscal tightening implied by current law."

"This could tip the economy into a recession that monetary policy could do little to counter," it said.

It predicted Britain will slip back into a modest recession early next year, threatening to derail deep austerity measures there.

Story: Timothy Geithner, Barack Obama ramp up pressure on Europe over economic crisis

It also recommended an urgent boost top the EU bailout fund and called on Europe's central bank to do more to stem the crisis.

Global gloom
The OECD report was the latest in a series of increasingly gloomy forecasts, and comes as China's economy is slowing and Japan's exports are tumbling.

Eastern European countries are wobbling as credit dries up from a pullback in lending by eurozone banks.

In the United States, the improving economic picture has clouded somewhat after a mixed batch of economic data and downward revision to third-quarter growth to 2.0 percent doused some of the optimism for a strong fourth quarter. Consumer spending slowed in October and business investment weakened, showing a recovery that remains weak and vulnerable to shocks.

Against this uncertain backdrop, financial markets are volatile as European leaders fail to deliver any credible solutions to the sovereign debt crisis and U.S. lawmakers hit gridlock on slashing the budget deficit, further eroding business and consumer confidence and damaging growth prospects.

The U.S. labor market epitomizes these problems.

Two years into a recovery in which corporate profits are robust, hiring should be rebounding sharply. But U.S. employment numbers due on Friday are expected to show an economy treading water, with 120,000 new hires in November, up from 80,000 the prior month but way below the level needed to improve the outlook.

"The trend has been fairly stable over the last five months, stuck at a level just about strong enough to absorb new entrants into the labor force, but not to reduce the unemployment rate significantly," said Jeoff Hall, economist at IFR Markets, a Thomson Reuters company.

In fact, large U.S. companies are showing new caution.

Boeing Co announced plans last week to shutter a Kansas factory that employs 2,100 as it prepares for U.S. federal budget cuts that will hit defense spending hard. Bank of America began sending lay-off notices last week to technology staff as part of plans to cut 30,000 positions over the next few years, and Wells Fargo & Co also began job cuts.

Whirlpool Corp, the world's largest maker of household appliances, reports softening demand worldwide, including fast-growing emerging Asia and Latin America, and is cutting about 5,000 jobs in North America and Europe.

Srinivas Thiruvadanthai, director of research at the Jerome Levy Forecasting Center, also is concerned that fiscal tightening in the United States ? from the roll-off of 2009 stimulus projects, cutbacks to city and state budgets and possible expiration of the payroll tax cut ? will further weaken the U.S. consumer, who accounts for the bulk of growth.

"Clearly Europe is in bad shape, and the global economic conditions are worsening too. If the U.S. consumer tires, the chances for recession are met," he said.

Since late September, the Levy Center has forecast that Europe's debt crisis will hit the United States through financial markets, its banks, weakened exports, lowered corporate profits and drag the United States into recession in 2012. Thiruvadanthai sees nothing to alter that picture.

European mess
European finance ministers meet again on Tuesday to review strengthening the region's bailout fund, seen only a month ago as the centerpiece for halting its debt crisis. But the sharp deterioration in eurozone debt prices, which sucked in Germany last week in a failed bund auction, has undercut how much the fund can be leveraged, leaving investors highly skeptical that politicians can use it to stem contagion.

Italy issues 8 billion euros in longer term debt on Tuesday. Two-year Italian paper already is priced a 8 percent, one full point above the yield considered affordable by a nation with a stalled economy. Belgium, downgraded from AA-plus to AA by S&P on Friday, raises cash a day earlier, with the cost of insuring its debt having hit a record level.

Goldman Sachs warned on Friday that the public sector funding problems, which are hurting bank profits, are restricting household and corporate credit in Europe. This "could turn the moderate recession we are forecasting into something more akin to the 2008/09 experience."

Ripples from the slowdown are felt as far away as Brazil. Its central bank is expected to lower interest rates on Wednesday for third time since August, by a hefty 50 basis points, to 11 percent.

For the United States, recession remains a minority view, though forecasts are being revised downward for 2012. The Institute of International Finance, for instance, noted near-term resilience in its latest forecast but storm clouds ahead.

As long as European leaders delay in delivering a fiscal union that can rescue the common currency, financial markets will remain in the driving seat and the growth picture shaky.

"The world is struggling along, with downside risks from a bust-up of the eurozone, or Greece, Italy and Spain leaving. It might be that Europe just runs out of time to fix its problems," said Paul Ashworth, economist at Capital Economics.

AUTOS: Toyota/Subaru Sports Coupe, At Last

Toyota GT 86 powered by Subaru will be unveiled at Tokyo Auto Show this week; U.S version wil be a Scion while Subaru gets its own model.

After a seemingly endless number of concept and show cars, Toyota has finally released the full details of the upcoming 2013 GT 86 sports coupe that will debut at the Tokyo Auto Show on Nov. 30.

Powered by a 197-horsepower Subaru flat-four engine, GT 86 will have the lowest center of gravity of any Toyota product. (Photo: Toyota) The all-new 2+2 Coupe was developed in conjunction with Subaru and as a result features a flat-four, Subaru?s signature engine type. Displacing just under 2 liters, the naturally aspirated, direct-injected boxer engine produces 197 horsepower. All this power is fed to the rear wheels through either a manual or automatic six-speed gearbox.

In the U.S., the GT 86 will be sold as the 2013 Scion FR-S, which was shown in concept form at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show.

Thanks to the flat engine, the GT 86 has the lowest center of gravity of the entire Toyota range. The new sports car's body is tightly draped over the compact chassis, resulting in a very curvaceous styling that includes Toyota's new shared design language that includes a larger, lower grille.

The GT 86, or Scion FR-S, will be available next summer, and Subaru will also release its own version known as the BRZ. The Subaru range will include a 300-plus-horsepower STi version, which was shown in concept form in Los Angeles earlier this month.

Ecuador urges 4 villages to evacuate near volcano (AP)

QUITO, Ecuador ? Ecuador's government is urging four villages to evacuate because of increased activity in the Tungurahua volcano not far from the country's capital.

Authorities in the South American nation say about 700 people live in the mainly farming communities on the slopes of the volcano in the Andes.

Ecuador's Geophysical Institute says increased activity that began Sunday is billowing columns of ash, sending superheated clouds of gas down the slopes and cascading hot rocks from the summit.

The agency said Monday that it is recording a gradual accumulation of lava in the mountain.

The 16,480-foot (5,023-meter) volcano is in a sparsely populated area about 84 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of the capital, Quito. It has been active since 1999.

Dutch transfer killer whale Morgan to Spain (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? A plane carrying a young killer whale has departed the Netherlands Tuesday afternoon heading for a Spanish amusement park after conservationists lost a legal battle to have her released into the open sea.

Around dawn Tuesday, the 1,400-kilogram (3,085-pound) female orca named Morgan was lifted from her tank by a crane, resting in a hammock that restrained her movement and protected her fins. Trainers kept her wet during the transfer into a blue-painted box on a truck, and her breath stood out in plumes as she exhaled through her blowhole from time to time while hanging several meters (yards) aloft in the cool morning air.

More than 50 trainers, handlers and other workers were involved in the operation moving Morgan onto the plane that left Amsterdam around 1 p.m. local time headed for the Spanish island of Tenerife. There Morgan will be transferred again onto a truck and finally hoisted into a much larger tank in Loro Parque by early evening, the Harderwijk Dolphinarium said in a statement.

The city of Harderwijk had issued an emergency ban blocking "Free Morgan" demonstrations during the transfer, though a coalition of conservationists who sought to have her released said they never planned to interfere with the operation.

"We would never do anything that could endanger Morgan," said coalition spokeswoman Nancy Slot.

Morgan, who is estimated to be about 3 years old, weighed only 400 kilograms (880 pounds) when she was rescued in shallow waters off the Dutch North Sea coast in June 2010.

The Dutch government permit that originally approved her capture said the dolphinarium could hold her and restore her health so she could be released. But after the park assembled a team of experts for advice on what to do next, they found she had little chance of survival in the wild unless her natal pod, or family, could be identified.

Analysis of her vocal patterns showed only that she was from Norwegian waters.

Opposing experts for the "Free Morgan" group said the dolphinarium was guided by financial interests, rather than concern for the animal's well-being, and proposed a plan for reintroducing her to the wild.

International treaties prohibit the trade of killer whales ? which are actually classified as oceangoing dolphins ? without difficult-to-obtain exemption permits. Fewer than 50 orcas are held in captivity worldwide and the bulk of them are owned by SeaWorld, a subsidiary of U.S. private equity giant the Blackstone Group L.P.

A female capable of breeding and introducing new genes into the pool of captive orcas is worth millions of euros (dollars).

The Dutch dolphinarium is owned by France's Compagnie des Alpes. Loro Parque, owned by a German businessman, received four orcas on loan from SeaWorld that Morgan will join. Though Morgan cannot be transferred to the United States, any offspring she has may be.

The Harderwijk Dolphinarium, which put Morgan on display after her rescue, has not disclosed financial details of her shipment to Loro Parque, though spokesman Bert van Plateringen said it will not make money from the deal.

Orcas are thought to be among the most intelligent and social of mammals, and the idea of reintroducing captive whales into the wild garnered widespread public sympathy after the 1993 film "Free Willy."

Real life releases have a mixed record at best, however. Keiko, the animal that starred in "Free Willy," was released in Icelandic waters after 20 years in captivity. He died, apparently of pneumonia, after surviving two months on his own and swimming about 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) to Norway.

Though the "Free Morgan Coalition" says it will continue to seek Morgan's release, it concedes her transfer to Spain is a major blow to its hopes.

Experts agree that chances of a successful release into the wild decline the longer an orca is exposed to humans.

Just 1 in 4 with HIV have infection under control (AP)

ATLANTA ? Only about 1 in 4 Americans with the AIDS virus have the infection under control with medications, federal health officials said Tuesday.

Part of the reason is that about 20 percent of those infected with HIV don't know it. People can have an infection for years without developing symptoms.

An infection was once a death sentence, but medications that have been available for 15 years can turn it into a manageable condition, allowing those infected to live longer and healthier lives.

However, in its first study of the issue, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found only a small fraction of people are being successfully treated.

"The big picture is we could do a lot better than we're doing today," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, the CDC's director.

Of the nearly 1.2 million people with HIV, only about 40 percent are getting HIV-fighting medications regularly. Worse, only 28 percent have gotten the virus to low levels in their blood.

That translates to roughly 850,000 Americans who don't have the virus controlled, Frieden said.

Success rates were lowest in blacks and women than in others, the CDC also found.

There are various reasons why more people aren't doing better, health officials said. Some were still early in their treatment, when the virus hadn't been beaten down to low levels yet. Some dropped routine care because of money or other obstacles. Some didn't stick with it for other, more personal reasons. And, in a small percentage of cases, the medicine may not have worked.

The HIV virus can cause AIDS, an illness that destroys the body's immune system and causes about 16,000 deaths annually. In the United States, the number of new infections each year has held steady in recent years, at about 50,000.

The CDC analysis was based on several sets of data, including surveys and surveillance reports from 2010 and a study that looked specifically at the medical care of people with HIV.

The good news is that once HIV-infected people get plugged into medical care, the drugs bring the virus under control nearly 80 percent of the time, health officials said.

But there are still not enough people being diagnosed, and there's a worrisome gap between those who are diagnosed and those who get in ? and stay in ? treatment, some experts said.

"It's not good enough to get them tested," said Dr. Diane Havlir, who runs the AIDS program at San Francisco General Hospital.

San Francisco has been unusually aggressive about closing that gap. Patients are routinely tested for HIV at emergency rooms, and everyone who is diagnosed with HIV is offered treatment. Elsewhere, medical treatment can be delayed until their immune system dips to a certain level.

On Tuesday, CDC also announced a $2.4 million campaign to encourage HIV testing. It's the government's first campaign aimed specifically at black gay and bisexual men, who account for nearly a quarter of all new HIV infections in the United States.

Gov't: US not responsible for Europe's debt woes (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The White House said emphatically Monday that U.S. taxpayers are not responsible for helping Europe solve its debt crisis, as President Barack Obama and European Union leaders huddled in Washington amid growing fears over the future of the euro.

Experts say that without drastic action, the euro could be days away from collapsing, a scenario that could cause further financial damage to the already shaky American economy.

Obama and senior U.S. officials were spending much of Monday meeting with top representatives from the EU as part of an annual summit focused largely on the global economy.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama would reiterate in the meetings that Europe must act decisively and conclusively in order to rein in its debt crisis, and should not expect additional financial help from the U.S.

"This is something they need to solve and they have the capacity to solve, both financial capacity and political will," Carney said.

"We do not in any way believe that additional resources are required from the United States and from American taxpayers," he added.

The European Union was being represented in the meetings with Obama by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, and High Representative Catherine Ashton.

Back in Europe, leaders are circulating new ideas for how Europe could finally cap the debt woes that began in Greece two years ago and have spread to other larger economies, most notably Italy. Among the ideas floated was a plan for the eurozone's six AAA-rated nations to pool their resources via a joint bond to provide assistance to some of the single currency bloc's most indebted members. Also under consideration is a fast-track move to a fiscal union among the 17 countries. Germany wants such an arrangement in return for its money.

The latest bout of turmoil to afflict the eurozone came last week after Germany failed to raise all the money it wanted in a bond auction and Italy had to pay significantly more to get investors to part with their cash.

If a busy bond schedule this week meets with an equally-poor reception, then the euro's countries would be in real danger of being locked out of international markets and would face the devastating prospect of defaulting on their debts.

Obama has spoken frequently with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy in recent weeks, and met with leaders from several European nations earlier this month during the G-20 economic summit in Cannes, France. The president offered his support to his European peers, but made clear that it is their responsibility to solve their debt woes.

The White House says other topics on the agenda at the U.S.-E.U. summit Monday included supporting democracy in the Middle East and North Africa, cooperation on counterterrorism and trans-Atlantic law enforcement, and Iran.

Report claims coverup in Russian lawyer's death (AP)

MOSCOW ? A government probe into the death in prison of a Russian lawyer who exposed official corruption covered up a brutal beating he received in prison and the deliberate denial of medical treatment, a new report claimed Monday.

Sergei Magnitsky, who was arrested after accusing officials of corruption, died in November 2009 after the pancreatitis he developed in prison went untreated. Two prison doctors have been charged with negligence.

The 37-year-old had been arrested by the same Interior Ministry officials whom he had accused of using false tax papers to steal $230 million from the state.

Monday's report was compiled by William Browder, a U.S.-born investor who owned and run Hermitage Capital Management, the investment fund Magnitsky had worked for before his arrest.

It chronicled the developments in Magnitsky's case, starting from the alleged tax fraud he had exposed to his prison torment and death that followed a beating by prison guards that led to his death. Compiled in a captivating, graphic way it also contained the evidence of what it described as an official coverup of Magnitsky's death, complete with pictures of dozens Russian officials it claimed were responsible for the death.

"All Government bodies systematically denied Sergei Magnitsky any form of medical attention," the report said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev acknowledged in July that crimes had been committed in the case, but the Interior Ministry later denied any official wrongdoing and the official probe into Magnitsky's death has only led to charges of negligence against the two doctors. Russia's top investigative agency, the Investigative Committee, refused to comment on Browder's report Monday.

The Prosecutor General's office, which in August reopened a criminal investigation against Magnitsky 20 months after his death, also denied comment.

Browder's report also contained pictures of luxury houses, expensive cars and other assets allegedly obtained by officials exposed by Magnitsky.

"The Russian government knows exactly who tortured and killed Sergei Magnitsky, as well as who stole $230 mln, but has refused to investigate and prosecute them," it concluded.

A panel of Russian rights activists had conducted its own probe into Magnitsky's death and presented the results to Medvedev. It concluded that Magnitsky's arrest and detention was unlawful, he was beaten before his death, and his prosecution by officers earlier implicated by him in corruption violated Russian law.

The U.S. State Department decided in July to ban entry to some 60 Russian officials, reportedly including senior figures in the Russian Interior Ministry, as well as judges, prosecutors and prison officials whom Magnitsky's colleagues had held responsible for his death.

Angered by the U.S. move, Russia last month banned entry to unidentified U.S. officials it claimed had been involved in killings and abductions.

Prince William joins Irish Sea rescue mission (AP)

LONDON ? Prince William joined a frantic rescue mission Sunday after a cargo ship sank in the Irish Sea, leaving several crew members still missing.

The second in line to the British throne, who is a Royal Air Force helicopter and known professionally as Flight Lt. William Wales, was aboard an aircraft which rescued two crew members early on Sunday, after their vessel suffered a cracked hull in gale force winds off the coast of north Wales.

Britain's ministry of defense said William had been co-pilot of the helicopter, which carried two people back to his base RAF Valley, on the Welsh island of Anglesey.

Authorities said five people remain missing after the Swanland cargo ship, which had eight people on board and was carrying thousands of tons of limestone, sent a mayday call.

Holyhead Coastguard said one body had been recovered from the sea, but that the fate of the other crew members was not yet known.

"We know that at least some of them are wearing immersion suits and have strobe lighting with them, however sea conditions are challenging at best," said Jim Green, a coastguard spokesman.

Rescue helicopters from RAF Valley and from Dublin coastguard base in Ireland were initially sent to the scene, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of the Llyn peninsula in north Wales.

Helicopters from RAF Chivenor, in southwest England, and the Irish Coastguard are continuing to search for the missing crew, along with boats from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

"Two RNLI lifeboats, along with four search and rescue helicopters and two other commercial boats, are searching for the remaining six crew," the RNLI said in a statement.

Gale-force winds battered the Irish Sea during Sunday and the coastguard said it is believed the poor condition could have caused the incident.

Europe scrambles to save euro (AP)

PARIS ? European leaders raced Monday to save the euro from impending collapse, as momentum gained for a radical proposal in which countries that use the common currency would cede control of a big chunk of their budgets to a central authority.

In the run-up to the next European summit on Dec. 9, hopes were rising that, with their backs to the wall, leaders will finally come up with a solution that will once and for all bring an end to a crisis that has threatened to wreck the global economy.

A raft of hitherto taboo ideas gained sudden prominence Monday.

Chief among them: a fast-track move to a fiscal union between the 17 countries that share the euro ? a proposal some say would be a big leap toward a United States of Europe. Such a move could greatly enhance European stability, but at a cost, critics say, of national sovereignty and democratic accountability.

Another plan gaining support in the face of fierce German resistance is for the eurozone's six triple A rated nations to pool their resources through a joint bond to prop up some of the single currency bloc's most indebted members. Germany, the EU's richest member, rejects the idea because it fears it would be tapped for the lion's share of the bailout.

A critical test comes Tuesday when European finance ministers meet for a summit in Brussels and Italy tries to tap markets for billions more in cash. U.S. President Barack Obama was meeting top EU officials Monday at the White House to discuss the crisis.

Whatever materializes, the euro is in grave danger ? with experts saying the currency could fall apart within days without drastic action.

Evolution Securities economist Gary Jenkins said a series of government bond auctions this week "may determine the future of the EU."

Financial Times columnist Wolfgang Munchau wrote Monday that the common currency "has 10 days at most" to avoid collapse and big decisions need to be taken, including moves to a fiscal union and the creation of a common treasury with wide-ranging powers.

As experts predicted the endgame for the euro, Europe buzzed with talk of a central treasury authority for the eurozone ? an idea that just a week ago would have seemed impossible.

Unlike the United States, which has centralized institutions in Washington D.C. for raising taxes and spending, the eurozone has 17 independent treasuries with little oversight from Brussels. That would change under the fiscal union proposal being aired ahead of the EU leaders' summit in less than two weeks.

While not explicitly backing such a move, Germany and France, the eurozone's two biggest economies, have promised to propose new measures that will make the 17 operate under strict and enforceable rules ? the hope being that no country, however small, can wreak such damage again.

The idea of fiscal union is controversial not least because it raises fears among some members that economic policy around Europe will be run by the EU's biggest player: Berlin.

But with Europe on the brink, it may be a price that many nations are willing to accept.

The break-up of the euro, established only in 1999, could have catastrophic effects around the global economy. Among the unappetizing prospects are a massive bank run, the seizing-up of the global financial system, and chaotic currency fluctuations for those that go back to their historic money.

"Everyone knows that if the eurozone crashes the consequences would be very dramatic and in the race after that there would no winners, just losers," said Finland's finance minister Jutta Urpilainen.

Already, the Paris-based OECD is warning that the global economy is in for a hugely rocky road over the coming months ahead. In its half-yearly report Monday, it said the continued failure by EU leaders to stem the debt crisis that has spread from Greece to much-bigger Italy "could massively escalate economic disruption" and end in "highly devastating outcomes."

The latest bout of turmoil to afflict the eurozone came last week after Germany failed to raise all the money it wanted in a bond auction and Italy had to pay through the roof to get investors to part with their cash.

If a busy bond schedule this week meets ? Italy is planning to raise euro8 billion on Tuesday ? with an equally poor reception, then the euro's countries will be in real danger of being locked out of international markets and facing the devastating prospect of defaulting on their debts.

Germany, as Europe's only powerhouse economy, would then have to decide whether to bail its partners out ? or bail out itself.

As governments nervously tap bond markets, Germany appeared to be readying to ask its eurozone partners to back measures for deeper fiscal union.

"The common currency has the problem that the monetary policy is joint, but the fiscal policy is not," Germany's Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said in a meeting with foreign reporters in Berlin. "Consequently, we are working now to expand the common currency through a common stability policy."

Schaeuble said the proposal, which Chancellor Angela Merkel is to bring up during the Dec. 9 EU summit, would only require passage by the 17 eurozone member states, although the other ten EU countries, such as Poland and Sweden, would be welcome to adopt it if they wanted.

The prospect of a deeper fiscal union has been greeted positively in the markets, with the Stoxx 50 index of leading European shares closing up 3.6 percent and the euro rising 0.4 percent to $1.3337.

"There appears to be a sense of greater urgency among eurozone leaders after some very worrisome developments last week," said Vassili Serebriakov, an analyst at Wells Fargo Bank.

However, analysts said such a move would take a long time to come to fruition.

"We do seem to be moving slowly towards more of a fiscal union but at a pace that may result in all the components being put in place after a complete meltdown of the financial system," Evolution Securities' Jenkins said.

Many think the ECB is the only institution capable of calming frayed market nerves and German Chancellor Angela Merkel's continued dismissal of a greater ECB role has frayed market nerves.

"The ECB has the means to provide a credible measure to avoid further contagion in the sovereign bond markets," the OECD's Chief Economist Carlo Padoan said. "And if you ask me if that is the lender of last resort function, I would say yes."

Potentially, the ECB has unlimited financial firepower through its ability to print money. However, Germany finds the idea of monetizing debts unappealing, warning that it lets the more profligate countries off the hook for their bad practices. In addition, it conjures up bad memories of hyperinflation in Germany in the 1920s.

So far, the ECB has been reluctant in taking on a bigger firefighting role. Current rules only allow it to buy up government bonds in the markets on condition that it sells an equivalent amount of assets.

Though figures Monday showed that it stepped up its purchases in the markets last week to euro8.6 billion from euro8 billion the week before, analysts think that's not enough to keep a lid on countries' borrowing rates. Italy's main ten-year bond yield stands at over 7 percent, the threshold that eventually proved too costly for Greece, Ireland and Portugal and led them to seek financial help.

One proposal that's often been touted as another key pillar of a long-term solution is the issuance of eurobonds, whereby the 17 euro nations pool together to raise money in the markets. Again though, Germany has opposed the principle of eurobonds since it would expose its taxpayers to the bad debt of weaker countries.

A variant of that emerged Monday with a report in Germany's Die Welt newspaper that the six eurozone countries with a triple A rating would issue bonds together. So-called "elite bonds" would be used to support the fiscally-endangered.

Germany's Schaeuble said the report was "completely made up."

Preferences
  • Post a minimum of three paragraphs, I understand about writer?s block and can tolerate posts that aren?t as long, but even when our characters are interacting there are more things to say than just what their response is, like thought and things the character notices. I don?t want three sentences spaced out as paragraphs either, I don?t count those as paragraphs. The more I get the more I feel like I need to give back, and if I can?t give you back the same amount of paragraphs, I will as close as I can.
  • I am fine with blood and gore but I don?t go into detail about sex, and I won?t do that.
  • I don?t want any love at first sight kind of things going on, there are times where characters already know each other and have hidden crushes, but I would like to bring out the hidden crush thing, instead of within the first few posts they?ve already decided to date.
  • If you have any ideas for the role-play or you want to say ?Hey, how about we do this?? I?m not going to tell you it?s a bad idea, I might even add on to that idea, or we can work something out.
  • I am excited to start any of these role-plays so if you are interested please either PM me or post in the thread and I?ll get back to you as soon as I see that you?ve replied.
  • I am still a student, so there are times where I won?t be able to respond, and there are times I won?t be able to get to my computer, and I know you?re going to have times like that too, so we?ll both have to be patient, even if it is an exciting part in our role-play.
  • In your reply to this thread, please say something about what role-plays you are interested in, if you have any questions and where you would like to role-play this (PMs, threads or email. I?m fine with any of them.)
  • If there is anything else you want to know please feel free to ask me, I don?t bite.

Immortal Danger
There is a little town, that is often forgotten, yet it?s very peaceful and quiet and probably very boring. The small town though is pleasant for parents that want to see their children safe, this town doesn?t have much things going on, meaning less danger for children and themselves. This town is good enough, with its own school, library and supermarket, but that is about it. If you want to go do something else that is big you have to go into the city, which gladly is pretty close to this small town.

Of course unlike any other small town there are three people living here. No, they aren?t any three people, these three have been living in this small town for a rather long time, yet they all look as if they were teenagers, they consisted of a prince and two people of protection. All three of them are known as immortals, they are only killed if their head is chopped off and they do age, but it is too slow for people to notice. Immortals do stop aging at a certain point though, but that age varies among them all, these three have been teenagers for a long time, but they had grown up to that age, and still hope to keep aging well into their twenties at least.

How come the rest of the town is filled with humans? Well, long ago, there used to be a bunch of immortals under different kingdoms, and the land this town was on, used to be one of them. This kingdom had been in a great civil war, rebellion had broken out and the two protectors of the prince had been assigned to him. One a girl, of great fighting skill and a boy of great magic skill, this boy happened to be part of the rebellion, but at the same time was in love with the girl. He had been careful with anything he released, even to the girl that he had a crush on. The girl though, was in love with the prince and the prince loved her. These two kept their love hidden but when they were alone they acted like a couple.

One day, the magic boy found this out, and was crushed, though the girl seemed relieved that somebody knew their secret, she trusted the magic boy. The rebellion was starting to get stronger and one day the magic boy decided to take advantage of this, he had threatened the girl to marry him and not the prince or the prince would die. Knowing she had to protect the prince?s life and couldn?t let him die, as his lover and as his protector, she agreed to marry him, but only if he agreed to do one thing for her. The magic boy agreed to these terms.

What was the one thing the girl asked of him? She asked him to erase the memory of the prince, not fully though, just the memories of them being a couple. That afternoon the rebellion had stormed the castle, and the girl was forced to fight against the prince, and knock him out as the magic boy erased his memory. The girl?s heart was broken but now her love was safe, now there wasn?t a thing to worry about, until the modern times came about. The prince hadn?t forgotten his feelings for the girl, he still loved her very much, and he still does. He gets jealous every time he sees the magic boy with the girl, yet he can?t do a thing about it. Until memories start coming back, every time something familiar is said or he sees something familiar. The prince doesn?t even remember the end of the rebellion when the magic boy, his other trusted protector, had taken his memories.

Now though, the immortals have died out and are scattered across the land, these three had managed to get through the whole thing and now live in the same house, they already own and are trying to get through another year of high school, for their classmates it is their third year, to these three it has been way too many years of high school. Gladly, the principle happens to be an immortal too, and is able get this all arranged for them. What happens though, when this prince?s memories come back? Will he try and find the truth of these two betraying him? Will he try to get his lover back?

I am looking for someone or two other people to play the two guys, I?m playing the girl. I would be happy with other ideas for this and I want someone that could help make this plot come alive with a lot of twists. I wouldn't also mind doing this with three people.

Fallen Angel
Fallen angels are just angels that have done something wrong, something to get them forced out of heaven. Most go straight to the underworld, others that are lucky enough to get a second chance go to earth. To get back into heaven they must help a human with a corrupt soul become clean again. Well, a fallen angel was forced to earth for a certain thing he had done. Though he happens to be very unlucky, he ends up in a place like Las Vegas, where there are people doing drugs everyday, prostitution is legal and there isn't anything morally right with this city.

He happens to meet a girl that is a part of everything in this city, a girl with a hard and sad past that just got into a worse way of living. This Fallen angel, doesn't think this girl is the one he is supposed to save, he just naturally helps this girl out with her drug issues, and whatever else she does on a daily basis that makes this fallen angel cring. This girl at first doesn't really relize that he is actually helping her in anyway, he just gives her a gentile push every now and then but it seems to be a strong influence.

This is the first time this girl had ever gotten help out of this life, a way out of this place. They begin to fall in love, but of course he is a fallen angel, he has to go back to heaven at some point right? This girl agrees to help him find some person with a soul so corrupt that he can go back, but what happens when their relationship goes too far? What happens when other angels get the word that this fallen angel has fallen for a human girl, or even that this girl knows about what he is? What happens when this girl's soul becomes clean, and the fallen angel leaves? You'll have to find out.

I will be taking the Fallen angel and I need someone to play the human

Make a Wish
A prophecy for told of a child that could do anything. A child that would come in contact with the fantasy world. The girl would be the only one with this and world would be untouchable for anyone else. The girl would have the power to wish for what she wants but it comes with rules, she could wish for things that would include changing the balance of things, she couldn?t wish for someone to love her just because, she couldn?t wish for someone to just drop dead, she couldn?t wish to manipulate time. The girl wouldn?t even know about these powers, until the age of sixteen. Of course it wouldn?t just stop there, two guys were trained for this event. They were supposed to stop at nothing so that the girl wouldn?t use her powers the wrong way, they would be her caretakers. They would the only connection the girl had that would know anything. The guys were there when the prophecy was made and were given an elixir that made them not age until the whole thing was over.

Well it had been a while, one of the guys hadn?t been heard from in a while, and the other guy was stuck at seventeen going through school and running from town to town. The girl that was born wasn?t the only one, the prophecy was wrong at the point that the girl was a twin, the powers were split. Only one guy figured out what was going on and now they have to find the other to see what to do, and his job can?t be that easy, there is someone after the two girls and there is more about the prophecy that hasn?t been told just yet.

((Okay I can be either the two guys or girls, although it would be better if I were the guys for storyline purposes, still it doesn?t matter and I was thinking of maybe adding that both girls have a crush on the same guy and they have a bit of a fight too.)

Realistic Romance Roleplay
Twins of a top company pretty much own the school, one female one male. The male happens to be the school president and the female is the vice president. Two of their friends that are also a part of the student council happen to be the only two that are able to get close to either of the twins. Two students (also, male and female) that were never on good terms, but knew each other since birth, decide to work together even though they don?t like each other what so ever so they can get close to the president and the vice president both having a crush on one of them. They try to get through with the friends and join the student council, to convince the twins to go out with them. One other problem that gets in their way is that the school has always been run by the company the parents owned and how much money the kid had. Will the twins go out with them? Will they ever get through to the council?

Okay I need someone to play the two students, and one of the friends that is on the student council. I will play the other student council kid and the twins, heads of the student council.

Boarding School for the Gifted
There was this legend of an academy that took special children, children with different powers. These children were identified for two things one, they have a twin and two they have an unusual marking on them. This marking was the same thing it was a star that seemed to almost be burned into their skin, but it was always in a different location for each set of twins. These children go through day to day life in this academy with nothing out of the normal, they have never known their parents and most them don?t care. They are all in this academy to learn and they have always been told about how different and how better they are than normal humans anyways.

Now, why are these children special? They have powers that humans do not have, it is different for each child, but they each have three powers. These children have lived in this school for a long time they all know each other very well, and they stay in the school until they turn about eighteen and are there from birth. The children that leave the school normally come back every now and then to talk to their former teachers and students that still stay at the school, but they bring back news of the human world. The children learn from birth how to hide their powers from others and are told that it is for the better not to show how different they are from regular humans.

Well, this school is real, and this school is probably better than any human school out there. The students that go there are pampered very well. These students have the best of the best in everything from technology to the basic needs of everyday life. All the students are given special prizes for doing well in their classes. Now there is a group of four students that are given the best of the best of the best, they are given everything because they are the top students in their classes. They are spoiled a lot and are given anything they want and given even better privliages than the rest of the students.

These four students have their own dorms that are in a different area from the other dorm rooms, their common room is better than the normal student?s common rooms. They even have their own class room because they are better students. These students are the best of friends and know each other really well, they are also known for using their powers whenever they want instead of just when it is necessary. These friends though have their own drama going on, with everyone being so spoiled and great friends things are bound to go wrong somewhere.

Okay, we would each be playing a set of twins, one boy and one girl. I would love to add more to the plotline so whatever you have in mind for this as well, I am open to it.

A Tale Of Two Addicts: Freud, Halsted And Cocaine

In his book An Anatomy of Addiction: Sigmund Freud, William Halsted, and the Miracle Drug Cocaine, medical historian Howard Markel tells the story of how Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, and Halsted, the acclaimed surgeon, fell under the addictive spell of cocaine.
